Start a Change Jar

This is something my hubby and I have been doing for years. We pay for our purchases with paper cash and put all the days change in the change jar. Our Change jar is a rather large container that use to have pretzels in it. You will be amazed at how fast those nickles, dimes, pennies and quarters add up.

Save even more by wrapping them yourself. Don't use Coinstar or any other counting machine they can cost up to 10% of the total That's $10 for every $100. If you don't feel like wrapping them yourself then pay your kid the $10 to wrap them for you then they can save up for something they want. Don't by you coin wrappers either you can go to your bank and get FREE coin wrappers.

After you've wrapped up the coins make sure they go into savings better still deposit them into a vacation or Christmas club account where you can't touch them until it's time. Even if you don't use it for that purpose it's still a good way to keep yourself from spending it and a great way to save up a safety net for emergencies.

Or if Commerce bank is in your area they have a change machine that you can use for FREE! :) I love that thing. And you can even win money for a guess close to the amount - so count your change beforehand and you can add some cash to your total. :)

We do exactly the same. That's how we opened up our little one's first saving account. Thanks for the tips.

We have one as well. We usually use ours to save for vacations. DH will sneak money in it that he gets for application fees, and I never know how much is in there. We put dollars in ours, too, so he'll usually sneak lots of those in. It's always a big treat to pull down the piggy bank right before vacation, count/roll the change, and deposit the bills. Great idea!

But -- now our 5.5 year old wants his OWN change, so he'll usually sneak the change into his change jar. LOL!

This is something that we will try as soon as we get married.

I can imagine how exciting it is to fill the jar everyday and see how fast the loose change reach the rim of the jar hehe. :)

We've also been doing this for years. We have separate jars for each coin and I have to agree, it's such a big help. :D

We do something similar, but only with pennys.

Does that make us even cheaper than you are? :)
