Be Careful What You Wish For

I love the snow and I"ve been complaining all winter "Where's the Snow Where's the Snow" Well we got hit again. It was so deep this morning that I had to jiggle the back door back and forth to get it open. I couldn't even get the front door open.

But I do love the snow. It makes everything look like magic. Its so quiet and peaceful even the trains rushing by is hushed. I was out shoveling snow early this morning and there was no about. The plows hadn't even come through. When I got tired I would just stand there and listen to the quiet. If i listened really hard I could hear a car passing a few roads away. But it seemed for that moment all the world was at peace.

Pack It In

Do you know how much that lunch your buying at work is costing you every day? One of the easiest ways to save money is to pack your lunch instead of of buying it. I will use my hubby as an example. When he was buying lunch he spent about $3.00 on soup and a soda or coffee. In a week that's $15 bucks. In a year that $1095! Now my hubby tried to eat lunch as cheap as possible but he always came home starving so he would snack until dinner (think more money on snack food) this adds to the cost of his lunch by an undetermined amount depending what he eats. By packing up left overs and adding a nice salad or and a thermos of tea I can cook up a much more filling lunch for a lot less.

Can I make it 30 Days

Starting on the first of next month I'm going to try shopping once a month for groceries and it's not going to be easy.

Why you might ask well the truth is I have a tendency to pick up things I don't need when I shop even when armed with a shopping list. There always seems to be something ... OOPS I forgot to put that on the list I better pick it up or oh what a good deal. Of course the more frequently I go shopping the more of this stuff I pick up. I can go into the store with the plan to just purchase milk and end up with a basket of unplanned purchases. If I can trim the number of trips I make I can trim the number of unnecessary purchases and save money. It also gives me a chance to collect coupons for the things I use frequently.

I'm going to get the kids involved by letting them help me create the menu. Hopefully it will help my son the pickiest eater on the planet to eat dinner more often lol.

Order Your Seed Catalogs

Woo Hoo I got my first seed catalog of the year. It's Burpee's Catalog and I've been enjoying looking through it. They have some really interesting looking choices. You should see those blue potatoes. They also have a collection set for Patios and Small Gardens. It has several of the plants I grew last year including cherry tomatoes, peppers eggplants and a lettuce blend. I'm definitely adding it to the possible order list. I can't wait for the rest of my catalogs to come in.

I'm posting several direct links to the different seed companies that I'm ordering my catalogs from that way you can use them to order yours too.

Despite The Snow

I've started planning for my next container garden. I think I will start early and plant seeds once a weed so that I have several plants that arrive at maturity at different times during the spring and summer. I'm going to be ordering some seed catalogs tomorrow. I'll try and remember to post some links so if you need your catalogs you can order too. I'll be looking for compact plants that will do well in a container. I still want to grow tomatos, eggplants and peppers. I didn't have much luck with the broccoli so I think I'll skip them this year since I'm very limited on space. I'm also looking at growing some winter squash so we have some nice fresh veggies in the winter.
My Hubby got very creative on Wendesday. We finally got loads and loads of snow and he was out every hour to keep up with it.

Instead of just shoving it off to the side to clean off the driveway he started creating a hugh mound of it at the back of the driveway.
As you can see what we ended up with was a crazy cheap way for the kids to enjoy some sledding. They have been having a blast for the last two days zipping down our own personal sledding hill. No waiting required.

So Disappointing

Well the Snow was here not much though not even enough to cover the ground. Instead in hit to the south of us with a majority hitting in New Jersey. Well I may get a second chance on Wednesday but I'm not holding my breath. Besides the kids will either miss the snow cause they're in school or miss school because of the snow and that doesn't work either way.

For a Little While

For a couple of weeks the weather had been very warm here I even considered setting up a makeshift greenhouse to start some seedlings. Silly me!

Tonight it is going to snow. Don't get me wrong I love snow... absolutely love it... but It was so warm I just couldn't resist thinking about some lovely fresh tomatoes and zucchini.... yummm fresh veggies. It's time for me to order my seed catalogs I think I'm going to try and find some more compact plants. I won't be able to go for heirloom plants I have to go for something newer so my little tiny backyard.

The Calm Before The Storm!

We are suppose to get some snow tonight. Unlike most people around here I can't wait! I Love Snow! Even though I may have to drive to work in it I still can't wait!

I grew up in Colorado and the thing I miss the most is the abundent snow fall. It covers everything ins clean blanket of white and even the most drab view turns into a magical winter wonderland beneath snow's crystal beauty. I do hope the Washington D. C. Doesn't hog it all and we get plenty. But you know the government they always have to take more then their fair share! LOL

May every one who gets a taste of this storm stay safe and warm!

A Little Stumped

I've been having a bit of writers block lately. I know I have plenty of things I do every day to save money and help the environment but danged if I can get it out. Maybe just talking about being stuck will help me clear my head.
Have you ever had those days when your stuck for an idea or maybe just a way to get a good idea started? That's how I'm feeling right now! Little thoughts sometimes float through my head but nothing concrete to write about. I've been thinking of writing some childern's books too. The ideas for the books are there but getting them out is a little harder.
I don't think there can be anything worse then having ideas floating around in your head that you can't get out. They're sitting there like some little kid going nah nee nah nee boo boo. Just teasing away not letting you alone since they just keep floating there.

Every day I sit down and think I should really write something today it's been too long since my last post......
Then after sitting there for a while I think well maybe I go load the dishwasher then I'll write something or I'll go check and see how things are going on facebook or I'll take the dog for a walk... usually this last one provides some great thinking time but lately... nada zip zilch.
So here I sit writing about not being able to write about anything and hoping my next post will actually be something of use. Have a nice night!

GOOD BYE OLD FRIEND

Fitz 1991- 2010

My best friend died yesterday and I can't talk to anyone about it. Every time I try, a giant knot forms in my throat and the words can't get past it. He left my life the same way he came into it meowing all the way. He was the noisiest little bundle of fur you could possible imagine. He was my awwww pet. You know the one you get when you see them and they are just so cute you buy them without thinking ahead. He is the one I broke the rules for since I was living in a military dorm at the time and pets are a no no. Now if I had thought ahead, if I had had any rational thought at all he would have never come home with me. Why would any rational person get the loudest cat conceivable when you live in a place where you aren't suppose to have pets at all? We managed though. He lived with my little sister for a short while and my parents too. My hubby and I bought our first home and the first thing we did was to retrieve my buddy and bring him home. He was with me for so long …. longer then my kids have been alive…. longer then I've been married…. almost all of my adult life. Now he's gone. No more meowing to eat in the morning… No more fluffy furball in front of the computer screen when he wants attention. … No more help with the laundry. Just a quiet Nothing that fills the house.
